Eco-footprints

Salisbury vs Winchester

Salisbury and Winchester are just 80km apart and have similar populations of around 43,000.

Yet Salisbury has the 2nd smallest eco-footprint in the UK whilst Winchester has the largest.  Why?

Incomes and house values are higher in Winchester than in Salisbury. This would suggest that the people who live in Winchester earn more money, can therefore spend more and when they do it helps increase their eco-footprint.

More people commute out of Winchester and further to work than they do in Salisbury.  This will increase Winchester's overall carbon footprint.

Workers in Salisbury tend to work closer to home and a higher percentage use public transport, walk or cycle which generates less CO2.
