Coastlines where the geology alternates between strata (or bands) of hard rock and soft rock are called discordant coastlines.

A concordant coastline has the same type of rock along its length. Concordant coastlines tend to have fewer bays and headlands.

Erosion is the breakdown and wearing away of material by various different processes.

Erosional processes

Corrasion - The waves ‘bash’ sand and stones against the cliffs.

Corrosion - As seawater is acidic, it dissolves the cliffs away.

Hydraulic Action - The water itself forces cracks apart.

Attrition - As the waves come up and down the beach, stones knock into each other.

Abrasion - The waves scrape stones along the sea bed.

What is coastal erosion?

Take a look at this video and find out!

All coastlines have different features but we can categorise some.

Take a look at the table to see the general features of hard rock and soft rock coastlines.
